Tobacco Meets Technology
While the idea of heating tobacco (instead of burning it) has been around for more than two decades, it took years of research and development to create a product that is satisfying to adult consumers. Around 6.6 million consumers have already chosen to switch from cigarettes to this product: the tobacco heating system IQOS.

At the heart of IQOS are sophisticated electronics that heat specially designed heated tobacco units. IQOS heats the tobacco just enough to release a flavorful nicotine-containing tobacco vapor but without burning the tobacco.

Here’s the key point: the tobacco in cigarette burns at temperatures in excess of 600°C, generating smoke that contains high levels of harmful chemicals. But IQOS heats tobacco too much lower temperatures, up to 350°C, without combustion, fire, ash, or smoke. The lower temperature heating releases the true taste of heated tobacco. Because the tobacco is heated and not burned, the levels of harmful chemicals are significantly reduced compared to cigarette smoke.

What is there? A nicotine-containing vapor – not smoke – that makes IQOS a smoke-free product that is appealing to smokers.

    Philip Morris International (PMI) is expanding its smoke-free portfolio with the addition of the new IQOS 3 DUO. According to the press release announcing the release, Philip Morris International relied on consumer insights and scientific substantiation to develop this latest version of IQOS, a heat-not-burn product, that will be available in Japan beginning in September and rolled out in other markets where IQOS is currently available by the end of 2019.

    “The launch of IQOS 3 DUO affirms our commitment to constantly and continuously investing in the development and commercialization of scientifically-substantiated products that can help the millions of adults who would otherwise continue to smoke to switch,” commented Jacek Olczak, chief operating officer of PMI. “These ongoing product updates, innovations and developments are vital in our achievement of a smoke-free future. Today approximately 8 million adults worldwide have switched to IQOS and abandoned cigarettes.”

    IQOS 3 DUO was designed with new features to help facilitate the transition of smokers of cigarettes to this device. IQOS 3 DUO has the fastest and most powerful holder of all IQOS products currently on the market and it allows two consecutive uses without having to recharge the holder. Also, the holder charging time is much faster compared to the IQOS 3 and IQOS 2.4+.

    In 2018, Philip Morris made the bold proclamation that it wanted to ditch cigarettes and support harm reduction and smoke-free products [read more here]. By 2025, Philip Morris International hopes to covert at least 40 million of its cigarette smokers to users of smoke-free products. It also has set a goal of having 30 percent of its total shipment volume come from smoke-free products. To date, Philip Morris International has invested more than 10 years and $6 billion in the scientific research, development, and commercialization of its growing portfolio of advanced smoke-free products. The company also reports that on average, 70 percent of the smokers that switch to IQOS end up abandoning cigarettes altogether, making it an important product to the company as harm reduction and smoke-free products continue to catch on in the market. IQOS is not completely risk-free as it does not eliminate nicotine from the smoking experience, making it addictive.
